This secret Qantas strategy could get you Gold status with just a handful of flights

Points Club Plus is winding down in late 2026. Before it goes, there's a little-known Qantas program worth knowing about - and most frequent flyers have never heard of it.

Qantas Lounge
The quick version
What it is The Qantas Tier Accelerator - a secret status challenge that fast-tracks you to Qantas Gold
Who it's for Frequent flyers with current Gold status (or above) on a competing airline
The shortcut 200 status credits in 3 months - instead of the usual 700 in 12 months
Qualifying airlines Virgin Australia, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Etihad, United and others
How to access it You have to ask Qantas directly - it is not advertised or publicly listed

If you're a Points Club or Points Club Plus member, the news has probably already reached you. Qantas is phasing both programs out later in 2026 - no official date confirmed yet, but late October to November is the window being discussed.

For a lot of everyday Australians, Points Club Plus was their quiet access to travel perks - lounge entry, priority boarding, the sense of being a valued customer - without needing to be a constant flyer. It rewarded smart points accumulation, not just flight frequency.

With that going away, it's worth knowing about a little-known Qantas program that does something similar - but through a completely different door. And Qantas doesn't advertise it at all.

What is the Qantas Tier Accelerator?

Think of it as a status challenge for people who've already proven their loyalty - just to a different airline. If you currently hold Gold, Platinum or equivalent status with a competing carrier, Qantas will sometimes offer you a fast-tracked route to Qantas Gold.

It's not an automatic hand-over. You still need to fly Qantas to earn it. But the bar is dramatically lower than starting from scratch - and that's what makes it worth knowing about.

What Qantas Gold actually gets you

Gold is the sweet spot in the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. Here's what it unlocks every time you travel:

  • Qantas domestic and international airport lounge access
  • Priority check-in, security and boarding lanes
  • Extra checked baggage allowance
  • Complimentary seat selection
  • 75% bonus Qantas Points on eligible Qantas and Jetstar flights
  • Greater access to points-based Classic Reward seats
  • Higher priority on the upgrade waitlist
  • Status perks across all Oneworld alliance partners - American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways and more
  • Access to Emirates lounges at many airports around the world

That last point surprises a lot of people. Qantas Gold travels with you across 13+ airlines every time you fly - you're not just carrying status on Qantas, you're carrying it through an entire global network.

Qantas Gold Benefits

Who can apply?

Qantas doesn't publish an eligibility list - which tracks, since they don't really publicise the program at all. But the principle is consistent: you need current Gold-tier status or above with an airline that flies similar routes to Qantas. The most commonly considered carriers include:

Airline Qualifying status tiers
Virgin Australia Velocity Gold or Platinum
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Elite Gold
Air New Zealand Airpoints Gold or Elite
Etihad Airways Guest Gold or Platinum
United Airlines Mileage Plus Premier Gold or Platinum
Oneworld partners are not included. Airlines like British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines are already Qantas alliance partners (One World) - so Qantas won't use the Tier Accelerator to compete with its own alliance members for your loyalty. The program targets genuine competitor airlines only.

How the challenge works

Once Qantas accepts your application, you get a 3-month window to earn 200 status credits on Qantas-operated flights. That's the full requirement.

200 status credits is quite easily achievable with a small number of trips. Qantas has a status credits calculator on their website where you can check the credits earned per route and fare type. A couple of return domestic trips on a Flex fare, or a single short-haul international flight in Business, will often get you there.

⚠️Important: You won't hold Qantas Gold status during the 3-month challenge period. It's only granted once you actually hit the 200 status credit target. Plan your flying before you apply.
🔎On double status credit promos: Qantas double status credit promotions typically list the Tier Accelerator as an exclusion in the fine print. Your flights still count toward the 200 target - they just won't count the double as part of the target.

How to apply - and what to realistically expect

There's no online form. No public application page. You contact Qantas directly and make your case:

Contact method Details
Phone (Australia) 13 1131
Phone (International) +61 2 9433 2329
Email frequent_flyer@qantas.com.au and/or frequentflyer@qantas.com.au (try both)

When you reach out, you'll need to:

👉 Confirm your current status with the competing airline
👉 Provide evidence of your recent flying history - typically the past 6 months
👉 Make a genuine case for why you'd be a good Qantas customer going forward

Qantas is looking for genuine frequent flyers with a consistent pattern of travel. Regular flying history and business class activity both work in your favour. The process exists partly to filter out people who earned status through a one-off promotion and aren't likely to actually fly.

A personal note from me on this I went through the early stages of the Tier Accelerator process myself as a Velocity Gold flyer. Qantas asked me to provide 6 months of VA flying history as evidence. The back-and-forth took a while - they came back a few times saying attachments weren't clear enoughm (which I couldn't validate on my end - looked very clear to me) - and at the time I had most of my perks covered through Points Club Plus, so I let it lapse before completing it.

With Points Club Plus winding down this year, I'm revisiting it. If that sounds like your situation, it might be worth picking back up.
Set your expectations before you apply. Approval is entirely at Qantas's discretion and they are selective. This isn't a guaranteed offer - it's a genuine application that Qantas can decline. Go in knowing that, and the process is worth attempting if you qualify. If you don't hear back on the first attempt, follow up after a few weeks.

Is it worth attempting?

Worth trying if: You hold Gold or above with a competing airline and you're already flying domestically a few times a year. 200 status credits is achievable without restructuring your travel around it - and the upside is real Gold status with all its perks.
🙅🏻‍♀️Probably not your play if: You were relying on Points Club Plus purely for perks with minimal actual travel. Gold status needs to renew each year (700 status credits), so if you're not flying regularly, it won't sustain itself.

The bottom line: if you fly a few times a year and you've been sitting on VA Velocity Gold - or similar status with another carrier - this is one of the most underutilised shortcuts in Australian frequent flyer circles. Most people don't know it exists. Now you do.

What to do next

  1. Check your current status with your airline Log into your frequent flyer account and confirm you hold Gold tier or above - and that it's still current, not expired.
  2. Download your last 6 months of flight activity Most airline apps let you download or export your transaction and flight history. Get this ready before you call - Qantas will ask for it.
  3. Contact the Qantas Frequent Flyer team Call 13 1131 (Australia) or email frequentflyer@qantas.com.au and frequent_flyer@qantas.com.au. Mention the Tier Accelerator or Status Match by name and explain your flying history with your current competitor airline. Be clear, be honest, be patient.
  4. Plan your 200 status credits before the clock starts Use the Qantas status credits calculator to map out which flights on which fares will get you to 200 within 3 months. Don't leave it to chance once the window opens.
